A Haiku Prayer

Sunset over Liberty Bay, with flag at halfmast

Once upon a time,
when tyrants assailed the world …
there rose up heroes.

Love Haiku

My love before she met me.

Before you met me
you seemed so cool and carefree …
and a bit badass.

Early Spring Haiku

I loved you first in lilac time

Before I met you
I’d never stolen lilacs
for anyone else.

Hometown haiku

The calloused farmer with his son.

The calloused farmer
cradles his newly born son,
awkwardly tender.

Hometown haiku

Street sign on the corner of Brunswick and Bob James Lane.

Who would have thought it —
my old neighbor does so well
they rename the street?

Love haiku

Portrait of the poet as a clueless lad

Before I met you
I thought I was so darned cool.
Clueless, more like it.

Hometown Haiku

Southeast Elementary School, Grade 5, 1962-1963, Marshall Missouri

My dear old classmates,
so very innocent, and,
so very human.

Automobile Haiku

The poet as a young race car driver

From an early age
I was taught that modern truth:
The car makes the man.

Love Haiku

Young couple in love

What was it really
that overcame your heart’s fear
when you fell for me?

Love Haiku

Odd couple

Your grandmother said,
“You want to find a good man?
Go to church, honey.”
